When a child or youth is placed for adoption, it is a time of joy and excitement and it presents the child with the opportunity to experience what it is like to truly belong to a loving, stable family. However, for many adoptees, the first few months in a new adoptive placement are also a time of confusion and even more change in a lifetime of loss, unpredictability, and unanswered questions.

“Help – I’ve Been Adopted!” will answer many of the questions that new (and long time placed) adoptees have about their lives. This book presents issues such as “Why do birth parents give up or lose their children?”, “What is attachment and how does it affect my life?” “How do adoptive parents get matched to a child?” “Who makes all the decisions about a child’s life” and more.

This book is full of helpful suggestions to promote discussion between the adoptive parents and the child, and it will help social workers and counselors gain a new perspective on how to support the early stages of an adoption placement.

"Why I Wrote This Book
I work with lots of children and teens who have been adopted and it’s not uncommon for them to have problems adjusting to their new lives. I help them express their questions about their life changes when they are in my office, but I’ve often wished I could give them a book that presented the problems and provided some solutions so that they could read it at home when they are in the mood. This book was written so that YOU can learn about some of the issues that are common in the lives of people who have been adopted, and to help you find ways to communicate your feelings to your new parents.
I also wrote this book for adoptive parents and adoption professionals who want to have a more neutral way to bring up topics that might be difficult to present to their child or client." Brenda McCreight

Endorsements for Help I’ve Been Adopted:

Brenda McCreight has done it again! In this enlightening book, Brenda conveys in simple, understandable terms, the complexities of older child and teen adoption. This revelatory guide will help parents, professionals and children not only navigate their feelings, but also help them use practical suggestions and examples to make positive progress in their personal adoption journeys. This little gem is a must-have for the adoption community!

This delightful book is described as being for older adopted children and those who live/work with them. I would have to add that this book is a great resource for foster children and older children considering adoption. The format of presenting useful factual material, followed by a "case study" and then suggestions is great. I know I will be using this book and believe that you will find this gem of a book valuable, whether you are a parent, social worker, child-welfare worker, foster child, adopted child, or anyone connected to those whose lives have been touched by adoption. Dr. McCreight is to be commended for preparing such a well written and sensitive and useful book.

A most enjoyable read. Even after all these years of raising many adopted children, and all of our very varied experiences, I found this book to be a page turner, in and of itself, as it presented information in a new light, from a unique vantage point. There may possibly be no endeavor more difficult to navigate for either new adoptive parents or for their newly adopted children - or one with more surprising rewards eventually. It is a world fraught with innate challenges, confused feelings and odd expectations. This book is a valuable resource that I highly recommend for all parties in the adoption world. I'd advise social workers to use it in training as well.

Dr. Brenda McCreight writes another compelling book about adoption, this time to the young people who got adopted at older ages. She breaks down in a very down-to-earth, concrete, and easy-to-comprehend way such complex issues as attachment, grief and loss, and the entire process of adoption. Though a book parents and professionals will get a lot out of, this book is impressive in the way Dr. McCreight speaks to youth in a way that youth will be able to appreciate and understand.
