All adoptive parents will need to learn how to talk to their children about adoption in a way that their children can understand. This is generally broken down into developmental ages and stages that describe what children can understand and which issues are important to children as they grow. When adoptive parents learn about these issues, they create a safe, home environment in which their children can comfortably discuss their feelings about being adopted. Since children and even teenagers have trouble putting feelings into words, this will help them to both validated and more self-aware.  In the process the children gain in self-esteem and intimacy skills.

Other parenting concerns specific to adoption might include understanding toddler adoption since many children are adopted as toddlers both internationally and through foster care adoptions. In both toddler adoption and when parents are adopting an older child, parents will need to be sensitive to transition, loss and attachment issues.  Some people believe adoptive parents almost need a formal education to be confident and competent to deal with the issues that toddler and older child adoption can present. Fortunately there are good books and specialized professional resources as well as parent driven groups that are now focusing on these issues.

For more specialized groups of adoptive families such as single parent adoption or gay and lesbian adoption, there are books, workshops and parent groups as well. Families are formed in so many different ways these days. These specialized families will experience and want to learn about the general adoption issues and get some advice and support for some of the issues that these adoptive parents and their children will face as well.

The amount of resources has become astounding and Tapestry Books is here to help you sort this out.
